About Paula
Artist Statement:
A simple paint-by-numbers kit changed everything.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, what was once a beginner's pastime became a revelation. Working on each section taught me to see color, shape, light, and composition in a new way. Paint-by-numbers helped train my eye and hand—and ultimately inspired me to become a painter.
I immersed myself in learning the craft, drawing inspiration from Australian artist Rod Moore's refreshingly simple philosophy: create compelling paintings with just three brushes, three colors, and five basic shapes.
Today, my work focuses on vibrant impressionistic paintings with a touch of folk-art charm. I enjoy transforming ordinary scenes into images filled with warmth, movement, and imagination. I often begin with grayscale reference photos, allowing value and composition to lead the way before bringing each piece to life with color and emotion. Sometimes the creative process takes unexpected turns—a cat sprouts wings, or a familiar landscape reveals hints of another world.
I also believe art can serve a purpose beyond the canvas. In one recent challenge, I completed 30 paintings in 30 days and donated the entire series to fundraisers supporting Ukraine.
Originally from Lexington, Kentucky, I now live and paint in Portland, Oregon. Whether painting a landscape, an abstract composition, or a commissioned portrait, my goal is the same: to create work that invites people to slow down, look closer, and rediscover the beauty, humor, and wonder hidden in everyday life.
